I've been following the posts re; turf tearing/tire scuffing for quite a while here.Have a 4200HST 4WD with Ag tires, but plan on eventually acquiring a set of turfs with rims and a belly mower. Checked with my dealers service manager and he has been unable to locate any info regarding this axle issue for my (New in Sept of '99) tractor.I have noticed pretty severe wear on the outside edges of the front tires (50 hours on tractor with very little road travel) and believe my tractor to have the "bad" front axle.My questions for this august group is;What do you recomend I do to resolve this problem? Anyone have a number/contact name at Deere corporate that I could contact?Thanks

I would be very interested in getting a number as well. Our dealer's service guy just advised me that the wear on the outside edge of the front tires on our August '99 JD4300 HST was due to driving it in 4WD on concrete. Yes, we do drive it in 4WD, all the time, because I was unable to change it back to 2WD until the service guy diddled with it. However, there is NO concrete here; closest thing is the asphalt driveway, which the tractor is driven on only to cross it. Is this normal wear & tear for 170 hours under these conditions, or should I suspect the bad axle problem? The dealer is purposely obtuse on these kind of issues. Thanks ....

I've been through the replacement, and it was a mutual arrangement between John Deere and the dealer. In short, the dealer is MOST IMPORTANT in this, and of course other service issues. I guess I was lucky, but I have four dealers in fairly close proximity, and they all seem to be okay. I didn't need a number at Deere, but they do have a web site. Good luck ....

I would first verify that I had the bad axle. THere are 2 hydraulic hoses coming out of the bad axle. There is only one coming out of the good axle. If you do have the bad axle, go to the dealer and tell him you have the bad axle and want it replaced. If he isn't agreeable, there is a customer service number in the back of your owner's manual you can call to talk with John Deere or use the web site to post a message. The web site also had this number for customer communications. (800)537-8233. I called this morning after reading all the complaints just to see if JD would talk to me. The person I talked to assured me they were there to help the customer resolve issues and had always been there. I can tell you that my dealer has resolved every issue I have had with any JD equipment (no problems with my tractor) so I was just calling because I wanted to know that I did have the manufacturer's ear if I ever have a serious problem. ....

My 4300 delivered 7-00 had the new axle but my dealer was fully aware of the problem. According to him your dealer should be able to get you a new axle with no trouble. He says Deere is very willing to solve the problem. If your dealer won't help, you need to complain to Deere about the axle, and your dealer. ....

I hate to sound like too much of a chick here, but when you say "two hydraulic hoses," do you mean two all together, or two in any particular location? I look at the front axle and on each side (by each of the front tires), there is one little 1/4-3/8" L-shaped metal thing coming off the axle toward the back of the tractor. These have a hose thing attached to each of them that heads up under the hood of the tractor. I assume this is the hydraulic hose, as I can't find anything else that looks like it may be it. I can't find anything in the manual which would label this as a hydraulic hose. I also assume then that there are two total, rather than one. So does that mean it is a bad axle? The tractor was delivered in August of 1999. Thanks again! ....

I have recently observed several new compacts 4200 to 4700 on dealer lots in three different states. I was supprised to find many units with the old axle design. If you have a JD product catalogue for 4000 series tractors, look on page 4 at the top view of the displayed machine. Closer inspection reveals one hydraulic cylinder attached to the right front wheel and a tie rod connecting both front wheels.(new design) In a previous version of the same catalog, page 4 displays another tractor (top view) with I think a double acting steering cylinder attaching to both front wheels, with no connecting rod.
I hope this helps. BTW I elected to order from the factory (3 week wait) rather than buying from inventory on the lot.

I had the axle replacement done on my 4300 4x4 about two months ago. I approached the dealer first about the replacement. He didn't have any problems with the replacement. He indicated that I needed to contact the JD Customer Service folks and log a complaint about how my tractor was tearing up the turf (he gave me the phone #). After logging my complaint, the Customer Service people contacted my dealer about the problem. It was only after the conversation between my dealer and the Customer Service person that my dealer could order the replacement axle kit. It took a few weeks for the kit to show up. It only took the dealer one day to fix it. The new axle is great! NO turf tear, no black marks on the driveway, and the wear on the outside of my front tires has almost completely stopped. I only had 50 hours on my tractor when I got the axle replaced, but my front tires looked like they had 250 hours on them! Good luck! Steve ....
